Go Green and Save Green with a High-Efficiency Water Heater

(NewsUSA) – As energy costs rise, the "green" movement and conservation efforts have become popular topics. Energy-saving recommendations appear daily in the media, and consumers are being offered subsidies or state and federal tax credits to encourage the purchase of more efficient appliances. However, many homeowners fail to consider their water heater when it comes to going "green."Although today’s water heaters are expected to operate for an average of 13 years, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends shopping for a new water heater if your current unit is more than seven years old. This allows an adequate amount of time for homeowners to research and select a water heater that best meets their needs instead of waiting until their heater breaks down and selecting the cheapest quick fix for cold showers.Consumers are increasingly turning to high-efficiency water heaters when replacing older units or during remodeling and building projects. While these models may cost more initially, savings in water and energy usage continue throughout the lifetime of the appliance, offsetting the price difference. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that these units use 10 to 50 percent less energy, benefits to both your budget and the environment.A recent study by the Gas Technology Institute simulated the residential performance of high-efficiency water heaters and conventional units. The Vertex from A. O. Smith, a hybrid, gas-condensing, residential unit incorporating tank-type and tankless technology, provided the best overall performance at average and high-volume hot water usage, which is the consumption of 64-gallons or more per day of hot water.Endorsed by long-time environmental champion Ed Begley Jr. of the HGTV series "Living With Ed," the Vertex provides sufficient quantities of hot water for shower after shower and operates at 90 percent thermal efficiency. Additionally, it is designed to meet the demands that modern lifestyles require."Using more efficient combustion to produce hot water at lower operating costs and 90 percent thermal efficiency, the Vertex is a good choice for customers who want to save energy without skimping on hot water," said David Chisolm, A. O. Smith Water Heater brand manager. For more information on the A. O. Smith Vertex model, visit hotwater.com/resources/energy-star-qualified-products/.

Natural Stone: Discovering New Forms of Art

Five words or less(NewsUSA) – Art can take on many different shapes and sizes in a variety of media. From watercolor paintings and bronze sculptures to still-life photographs and wood carvings, art can become the focal point of any interior living space. But, what if art could become part of a home’s architecture in unexpected ways? The answer is yes, it can, and it comes in the form of natural stone.
Perhaps it’s the allure of the exotic location from which it originated, or an unusual texture or uncommon color — representing that single event in time illustrating when and how the stone was created. Whether it’s a rare stone that is one in a million or one that was uncovered from the depths of the earth, natural stone can truly make a beautiful and exotic piece of art.
“Mother nature definitely has defined and shared her art with us through her supply of natural stone,” says Tom Harty, director of procurement at Stone Source, a company that specializes in curating natural stone and a member of MIA + BSI: The Natural Stone Institute. “The beautiful and creative veining found in natural stone is like a painting on a canvas.”
Whether natural stone is used to draw attention to a fireplace design, or is carefully selected as a standout countertop in a bathroom, the ways in which it can be used are endless. Some homeowners even enjoy mounting stone slabs on interior walls as pieces of art.
Chris Schulte, president of Las Vegas Rock, Inc., a quarry that concentrates on extracting metaquartzite stone and also a member of MIA + BSI, explains that the company’s “rainbow gardens” offer a multitude of natural stone colors ranging from purples and reds to yellows and browns. Some of these stones are so beautiful, they can stand alone as art. “We have many customers who have purchased slabs as wall art,” he says. “In fact, in the cities of Henderson, Nevada and Las Vegas, government buildings have slabs of metaquartzite displayed on the walls.”
Onyx is another type of exotic natural stone that can be used in artful ways. “The translucent character of many onyxes lends them to be backlit and incorporated as decorative pieces,” says Harty. In fact, popular uses of onyx include bar backsplashes, built-in wall cabinets, bathroom countertops, staircases, and fireplaces.
Those who find beauty in nature might see natural stone as more than just another building material; they see it as a unique piece of fine art. For more information about natural stone, visit www.usenaturalstone.com.

How to Enjoy a Live Sporting Event in Style

(NewsUSA) – Are you ready for some football!? As football camps commence and America begins to prep for the upcoming season, sports fans are gearing up for the country’s most popular sport.Indeed, as summer eases into the fall season, it’s a grand time to be a sports fan, what with football starting and baseball heading into the stretch run for the playoffs. Whatever your sports heart desires, however, there’s a certain code of conduct when you’re supporting your favorite team at the next home game. Remember, there’s a fine line between a rabid fan and an obnoxious one.To ensure your next trip to the arena or stadium is as relaxing and successful as ever, here are some essential items to bring and keep in mind:* Alcohol consumption and watching sports go hand in hand. Certainly enjoy a nice tall beer and some good-natured booing with your fellow fans, but remember to be a good citizen and respectful of your stadium neighbor(s).* Pack binoculars and seat cushions. You’ll never be more comfortable and glued to the action when you can see the plays and players as if you’re on the field.* Bring some snacks and drinks. If your venue allows, it’s always wise to keep hydrated with bottles of water.* Don’t forget your spittoon. Being at an arena or stadium crammed shoulder to shoulder with someone can be uncomfortable and leave you exposed to say the least. If you’re a smokeless tobacco user, there’s even less opportunity to take a discreet "dip" and spit. That is, unless you own a portable spittoon created by Atlanta-based FLASR. These new 4-ounce pocket-sized spittoons are designed to allow users to easily open and close with just one hand, making them ideal items to bring to the next sports event or any other public setting so you can privately enjoy your tasty tobacco. Another advantage to the FLASR flask is its advanced closing mechanism that ensures it stays securely closed when not in use, eliminating the risk of any messy spills or leaks. For more information, please visit www.flasr.com

Nationals Ballpark Teams With Lansinoh for Nursing Suite

Five words or less(NewsUSA) – Families with young children now have their own space at Washington Nationals baseball games, thanks to a partnership with breastfeeding product company Lansinoh, whose global headquarters is located in nearby Alexandria, Va.
Although breastfeeding in the stands at a ballgame is any mom’s right, the Washington Nationals offer an alternative for moms who want one: a cool, quiet, comfortable space that provides privacy while allowing moms to keep an eye on the game. The Lansinoh Nursing Lounge at Nationals Park is conveniently located just off the first base line and offers areas for breastfeeding, pumping and diaper changes, as well as a sink for rinsing pump parts, outlets for phone charging or other electrical needs and a toddler play area. Of course, the lounge is also outfitted with TVs so visitors won’t miss the action on the field.
“We are excited to unveil a dedicated and comfortable space for nursing mothers,” Valerie Camillo, Chief of Revenue and Marketing Officer for the Washington Nationals, said in a press release. “We truly value the fantastic feedback fans offered us, and are grateful for Lansinoh’s assistance in creating this space.” The lounge opening occurs during World Breastfeeding Week, an international initiative to raise awareness and acceptance of breastfeeding, and follows the release of findings from the 2015 Lansinoh Global Breastfeeding Survey. The survey included more than 13,000 pregnant women or new mothers in 10 countries. Overall, 96 percent of women agreed that breastfeeding is the best way to feed their babies.
However, approximately one-third of the women surveyed said that breastfeeding in public was embarrassing. Having dedicated private spaces for breastfeeding, such as the Lansinoh Nursing Lounge, can help support breastfeeding by making the process easier and more comfortable for moms who would feel more comfortable using an alternative space.
“As a local DC-area company and longtime advocate for moms and babies, we were thrilled to help design and support the creation of the Lansinoh Nursing Lounge,” Kevin Vyse-Peacock, CEO of Lansinoh, said. “Lansinoh is committed to providing breastfeeding solutions for every family, and we are very happy to work with the Nationals, who continue to demonstrate their commitment to supporting all of their fans.”
The Lansinoh Lounge opened on August 6, 2015, for the Nationals’ home game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Lansinoh is a global leader in breastfeeding accessories. Please visit www.lansinoh.com for more information.

Millennials Cited for Rise in ETF Popularity

Five words or less(NewsUSA) – NewsusaInfographic – Credit investors for being shrewd. Weary of forking over what can be large fees for traditional mutual funds, they’ve poured $3 trillion into exchange-traded funds (ETFs) -; with $2.09 trillion of that held right here in the U.S. And according to TD Ameritrade, it’s millennials, especially, who’ve been allocating more and more of their portfolios to these baskets of securities that trade intraday like individual stocks.

10 Tips to Stay Safe During Spring Break

Five words or less(NewsUSA) – It’s that time of year again when thousands of college students and young adults will flock to the far reaches of the world for spring break. Wherever your travels take you, it’s best to adopt the Boy Scout’s motto,”Be Prepared.”
The following tips will help you get started.
1. Arrive safely. Traffic death rates are three times higher at night than during the day. This means an all-night drive to Florida or any other sunny locale is not a good idea. If you can’t avoid night driving, have someone stay up to talk you.
2. Secure your hotel room. Make sure your door is locked and important belongings like passports and wallets are in the safe. For added security, consider bringing along a portable door stop alarm like that from SABRE, a manufacturer of security products for both law enforcement and the general public. The door stop alarm can alert you if someone tries to break in.
3. Ensure you know the name of your hotel. Memorize the hotel’s address, and take a card to give cab drivers (especially if you don’t know the language).
4. Protect your personal information. Don’t tell new acquaintances your hotel name or room number. You never know who has innocent (or not-so-innocent) intentions.
5. Employ the buddy system. Never leave a party with a stranger, but if you do, consider carrying a pepper gel key ring with you. SABRE offers one for less than $15. It’s good for four years, has a 12-foot range and up to 25 bursts.
6. Practice safe drinking. Always have one friend who plans on minimal drinking to look out for everyone and watch cups and glasses as well. Only accept drinks you’ve watched get made or poured in front of you.
7. Ask for help. If you need help, call yourself. Don’t rely on bystanders to call for you.
8. Drink water and wear sunscreen. Too much time in the sun can leave you dehydrated and at risk for sunburn or sun poisoning. Take a water bottle and sunscreen when you go out.
9. Open the lines of communication between students and parents. Providing an itinerary for family members is especially important when traveling overseas. In addition, know where the U.S. embassy or American consulate is in the country where you’re headed, and check in often.
10. Travel with your personal protection. Small pepper sprays can be checked through major airlines, and personal alarms can be carried on flights with you. If you’re out and about exploring, remember that pepper spray is legal to carry in all 50 states.

Some Jobs Really Are a Pain in the Back

Five words or less(NewsUSA) – More than 200,000.
That’s the number of nonfatal occupational back injuries — 217,666, to be precise — that resulted in lost workdays in just one year, according to the most recent annual data compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics. That’s more than the number of work-related head, neck, arm and foot injuries combined.
This has a huge impact on our economy: The World Health Organization has estimated that low back pain alone costs the U.S. between $100 billion and $200 billion annually.
Here’s some of the jobs that were most prone to back injuries:
* Laborers and freight, stock and materials movers.
* Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers.
* Nursing assistants.
* Production workers.
Until recently, surgeons could count on a booming business of patient referrals. But these days, given the increasing interest in drug-free, non-invasive alternatives and the reality of the outcomes of surgical care, chiropractic care has become a go-to approach.
“Very few conditions present situations where it is appropriate to proceed directly to the operating room,” Natalie Drake of the Texas Institute of Spine and Neurosurgery recently stated. “In many cases, less-invasive options will provide the desired relief.”
Cost has also played a factor in chiropractic’s rise. As noted in a recent study in the Journal of Manipulative & Physiological Therapeutics, “paid costs for episodes of care initiated with a D.C. [doctor of chiropractic] were almost 40 percent less than episodes initiated with an M.D. [medical doctor].”
Indeed, as Gerard Clum, D.C., of the not-for-profit Foundation for Chiropractic Progress says, “We’re noticing that patients who use chiropractic care as a first choice have better outcomes and incur fewer costs.”
